using dvd/cdrom on a guest

Hi,

I have ESXi installed on a HP Proliant ML110. All works fine except DVD/CDROM. It's recognized by the system (I can see it on storage adapters on global configuration as a cdrom device), but If I can't see it when I try to use it on a guest (I don't see any device on host settings ...)

Thanks in advance.

When you edit the settings of the VM you will need to ensure that you have selected 'client device', see attachment. Also you will need to reboot the VM to enable the CD drive.

Using the actual physical CD drive is possible but I would recommend mounting .iso files as the virtual CD drive as this does not require rebooting the VM and is much faster than a physical CD.

Thanks for you answer but I'm interested to use the host DVD/CDROM, not the client.

ESXi does have a problem with some SATA connected CD-ROMs. What sort of controller is the CD-ROM attached to and do you have a BIOS option to set the controller to IDE mode (don't do that if you have storage on the same controller).

Attached there are two screenshots showing the configuration. I hope it helps.

Do you have other devices connected to the ICH controller?

No, I have an SATA harddisk on vmhba0, but it's on another controller.
