resized XP Partition - vmdk file not resized.

hi,

i have resized a XP partition using gparted, from 20 GB to 15 GB, Xp now see 15GB partition but the vmdk file remaing at same dimension (20GB).

XP is hosted on vmware ESXi 3.5.

what i can do for resize vmdk file ?

You have also to "reduce" the size of your virtual disk.

To shrink a vmdk, you use the -X with the --force parameter,

the following would make a disk file 2G:

vmkfstools -X 2048M <diskimage.vmdk> --force

Make a backup of your data FIRST to start the operation.

I suggest to do not use this function, but use VMware Standalone Converter, that can both reduce vmdk disk and resize Windows OS partition.

Hi Andre,

Actually AFAIK, using vmkfstools -X to shrink a disk doesn't work since ESX2.x

The functionality has been removed as it was far too easy for people to shoot themselves in the foot.

He should use either VMware converter like you suggest or use a disk imaging tool like Ghost to clone the source disk to a smaller target disk.
