remove esx 3i and install esx

I am using the ESX 3i Server on Virtual Infrastructure Enterprise Edition.

My problem is I actually would like to use the ESX server (not ESX 3i) now because of it features like SNMP etc. I have virtual machines running on it as well.

What I would like to do is either get SNMP GETS working on ESX 3i or use ESX server. What are the possibilities of doing this? Will my VM's be removed i.e. if I am able to install the ESX in the first place.

If you have a shared storage for VMFS (or a different disk) the you could do a simple reinstallation.

During ESX installation chose to preserve the VMFS disk (or temporally disconnect the shared storage connection).

If you have all on the same disk, I think you could have some problem in disk layout (ESX require more space thant ESXi).

If you only need to configure SNMP con ESXi, you can watch at:

My main concern is the SNMP, but ESXi doesn't provide SNMP GETS. i.e. the VMware MIB's aren't present.

Anyhow I will look into your suggestion on reinstalling this.

Do you have your VMFS on a shared storage or dedicated disk?

In this case is real simple.

It's a dedicated disk.

Can't I just move images from a ESXi to ESX ? Downtime is not a problem, since this my testing phase.

The VMFS is the same.

I suggest you to do a backup (just in case...).

But if you could make some space for the /boot and / partition you can leave your VMFS as is.
