recommended local storage for vms?

i have a 1U - HP DL360G5, 20GB of RAM

running windows vmware server 2.0

SAS array A has 2x72GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

SAS array B has 4x146GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

i have roughly 4-5 vms and the vms are running kinda slow and laggy. these are all test and development vms.

i have another DL360G5, running ESXi 3.5

SAS array A has 2x72GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

SAS array B has 2x300GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

that one has 5 vms running and is also a test vm host server, i do not notice the same performance issues that i see on the windows vmware server 2.

i would probably put the blame on the windows OS in general. i keep reading around the web about people saying do raid5 do not do rain5, blah blah blah.

i plan to scrap the windows box and start from scratch with esxi again. any recommendations how to proceed with the raid setup for esxi?

SAS array A has 2x72GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0 (for the esxi os)

for the vm storage do i either do RAID 5 or stick with RAID 1+0

RAID 5 would probably be 4x146GB i would get about 400GB of usable space for vms.

SAS array B has 2x146GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

SAS array C has 2x146GB 10K SAS drives at RAID 1+0

so i would get 2 datastores at 137GB each?

or do i do 1 array at RAID 1+0 and get about 290GB of usable space?

most of the test vms are less than 40GB.

thanks for any input.

RAID 5 or 1+0 tradeoff depends on the required I/O.

If you have huge write I/O you must use RAID 1+0.

You have have more read /I/O and you need more space you can choose RAID 5.
