newbie needs help with connecting to guest OS from browser

Help

very new to VMware - about 2 weeks

I have a esx1 3.5 that I setup. I loaded a linux OS and it went fine. I can connect to the linux machine from my VMware console but I can't seem to figure out how to connect to the Linux machine from my browser.

Can i do that? The guest machine is named webserver and the IP of the VM server is 10.100.100.175. I have tried 10.100.100.175/webserver. and other iterations but it does not work.

Can someone please point me in the coreect direction or tell me what to read to figure it out. My google searches on the above have come up dead ends.

Thanks

Here is how you can do that:

first type the name or IP Address of your ESX Server (https://esx1 or https://x.x.x.x)

Then log in to web access using root user name and your root password.

Double click on your Virtual machine and under Commands Section click on Generate Remote Console URL

Copy and paste it in your browser and you should be good to go.

Larry Sadat gives you the way to get at the console through VC - using the Web client.

To "log into" a UNIX box ( LINUX, Solaris, SuSE, ....) you use Telnet or ssh. The default telnet session in Windows should work to verify connectivity (unless you've removed Telnet as a security precaution).

I think I am missing something in my install. When I connect ot the machine from a browser I get a welcome screen. I can connect to the web browser datastore and look at my iso folder and the folder of my guest OS.

Did I not install something?

Using esxi 3.5

Thank you very much for the help

Larry you are connecting to the Virtual Center - not the guest OS.

Virtual center wil have a tab for "console" try this.

Once you have a prompt and are logged in see if you can ping your router.

Once you can ping your router add a user and then connect with TELNET or SSH - welcom to the wonderful world of command line.

I am connecting to the Virtual Infrastructure Client. When I do that I can get to the console button.

I thought I would be able to get to the Guest from a browser. Am I more confused than I thought?

Thanks for being patient

OK,

there are different ways to connect to a virtual machine ( and for different people)

for example:

1- if you have a windows Server and your users want to connect to that VM, they can use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)

2- With Linux you can ssh into the VM

3- for your management purpose you can use the console view of VI Client (Virtual Infrastructure Client) - And that will give you the real console.

4- if you wan to connect to your VM through Web browser you will use the method that I mentioned above.

Have fun

I couldn't get that method to work either.

I think I need to be a bit more reading.

I read what you sent but it isn't for ESXi 3.5.

I searched a bit more and I read that ESXi 3.5 does not support Web Access.

Is that true

Sorry, My bad.

But in your first post you did mention ESX 3.5, not ESXi

Also the process in ESX 3 and ESX 3.5 and ESX 4 is the same. (That's why I gave the Web access documentation from 3.0).

check this please:

First check that you can ping the guest. Assuming that it does respond you will probably need to change firewall settings on the linux guest. By default few if any ports are open. You will need to do some reading as each linux flavor will have it's own way of making changes. You will need to open or enable port 80 for regular web traffic and port 443 for ssl. You can temporarily disable the firewall to test. That will require some more reading. You may also need to start the web server service on the linux guest. More reading. If you installed the gui in the linux guest you can try launching the linux browser to test the webserver. You can use to test. If you don't have the gui installed see if you have lynx or links or w3m text based browsers you can test from within the linux guest again using
