new VM existing Virtual Disk creates _1 folder -> how to solve

Hello,

When creating a new VM based on a existing Virtual Disk a new folder with _1 added is created. This folder contains the .vmx files, nvram, log, vmxd and vmsd files. I don't want these files in a seperate folder but in the original.

example:

datastore1\myVM\myVM.vmdk

datastore1\myVM\myVM_flat.vmdk

are my original files, when creating a newVM based on an existing Virtual Disk it creates the following location for vmx and the other files partly listed above

datastore1\myVM_1\myVM_1.vmx

datastore1\myVM_1\myVM_1.nvram

etc.

This is clearly an unwanted situation. How can the files from the _1 folder be moved to the original folder.

How to tell ESXi to start looking for the vmx file somewhere else and with a different name.

Thanks.

Is there a way to move these files over and

If you want to use a vmdk as a template create your new VM and "DON'T" create a disk. ESXi will create the folder and and the files for the new VM. Now you can copy the template vmdk to the new VM folder. Edit the VM and add an existing disk. Browse to the folder and add the vmdk.
