missing .vmdk file

Hello!

I have a problem: miss a VM_name.vmdk file, but VM_name-flat.vmdk file remain in VM directory and VM still working. Does Anybody know the reason of such behaviour? What can I do to prevent missing VM_name-flat.vmdk file in future?

P.S. VM runs on VMware ESXi 3.5 U3 hypervisor.

To get back again your disk, create a new vmdk disk with the same size.

Then overwrite the *-flat.vmdk file with your data.

Thanks, Andre

We already have recreated VM_name.vmdk file, and VM running well, but I want to know the reason of this behaviour, and what can I do to prevent it?

Have you delete or move some files from your datastore?

On a running VM you can (for example from CLI) delete some files, cause only a few file (the flat for example) are locked.

No, we haven't deleted any files.

This usually is a human error. Never seen this happening out of the blue. I am not trying to blame anyone but would suggest you check the VMs log files to see if anyone removed a disk.

Could I check the VMs files removal if VMs log files have been deleted too?

This would probably have been done from the command line since deleting from the VI client would have also deleted the flat.vmdk. Any scripting etc?
