image level backup solutions

What product does a good job of doing an image level backup of the VMWare ESXi VMs without having to turn them off?

And what's the price range?

I'm thinking about moving away from doing a traditional file level backup to doing an image level back up of the vmdk.

Hi,

Consider using VCB. It is included in VI3.

Hello, we don't use VI3...

About the ghettoVCB.sh, if it has snapshots, it won't work? And can it do incremental or differentials?

Most common right now are VizionCore vRanger and Veeam Backup

If you upgrade to vSphere you can consider VMware Data Recovery

Typically if I rember correctly you can consider each of them to be about $1.5K per socket of your ESX hosts

Note that VizionCore vRanger and Veeam Backup both require VCB integration for ESXi. However this just involves installing VMware's VCB component and an vendor specific integration component on the same server as the product with no complex tasks to configure VCB.

For Windows guests you can try http://DriveSnapshot.de While it does not capture the vmdk it can capture a complete running VM. It is very inexpensive and script-able. You need to create a new VM and use a bootable CD to restore but it is very quick at both the copy and restore. It is easy to restore individual files by simply mounting the drive image. It does do differential copies.

This is not entirely correct, Veeam Backup does NOT require VCB in order to support ESXi. It can process ESXi with and without VCB.

If you have a free ESXi version Veeam solution will not work with Update 4. Veeam officially stopped supporting this as they've been asked by Vmware to do so.

Recently, VMware requested that Veeam discontinue support for ESXi

Free in Veeam Backup and Replication in order to comply with VMware’s

updated licensing policy,” Timashev continued. “In light of VMware's

request, and our close technical partnership, Veeam Backup and

Replication will no longer support ESXi Free. We will still continue to

offer support for ESXi Free to existing Veeam customers who purchased

Backup & Replication prior to version 3.1.

All other snapshot based backups scripts stopped working since U4 update as VMware removed ability to write to - SDK. Only one solution is ghetto backup scripts, but in this case you'll need to use unsupported service console to upload/schedule your backup scripts.
