I have a system running VMWare Server 2.0 on RHEL 5.4.
I would like to move my VM's to a new ESXi 4.0 U1 server.
Can I use the Server 2.0 VMDK hard drive files with the ESX 4.0 server?
Thanks in Advance.
VMware server uses hardware version 7 by default. ESXi uses hardware version 4. You would need to use converter to get beyond the hardware differences.

Sorry you posted in the ESXi 3.5 forum. ESXi 4 uses hardware version 7
Is Converter an option for you? I would use converter to get them on to your 4.0 server.
I have never used it before.
If i need to i can try it.
But im just wondering if the VMDK files are interchangeable.
Server 2.0 uses Infrastructure management and so does ESX.
They give the same series of questions for making the disk images.
If anyone can tell me yes or no the VMDK's are interchangeable, it would be appreciated.
If theyre not ill just have to get a copy of converter.
Thanks
EDIT - According to the interoperability chart for converter, it does not support Server 2.0 as a source.

So in theory, Server 2.0 VMDK's should be interchangeable with ESXi 4.0 then?

In theory yes. YMMV of course.
Thanks. When i get it up and running i will give it a try and see what happens. Hopefully magic.
Magic is always good.
