VI client loses connection to ESXi (3.5 update 4).

Hi all,

I've got several ESXi servers in remote offices. One is running on an HP DL385 and second one is on Dell 2900. Both run ESXI 3.5-update 4, build 158874.

The problem is that every time i connect to Dell box over VPN - VI client loses connection in about 1-3 minutes. Error message pops up and says " The VI client has lost the connection to the "IP" server. Do you want to return to the login dialog?" I connect to both machines with VI client 2.5 build 119598.

When i'm on a local network - VI client runs fine, when I'm coming over VPN - i lose connection every single time. Yet, runnign over VPN works for HP box at a different site. We've replaced firewall/VPN appliences, installed new switches, changed management NIC, new cables.. the problem still stays.

Before the latest patch both machines were on 3.5-update 3 and had the same behaviour, so I don't think it is a bug in the new release.

Does anyone have any idea on what to try?

How many NIC are you using for SC? On PE are the integrated broadcom or are addiotional Intel?

i've got 2 built-in broadcom nics and one dual port intel add-on card. tried switching the management switch in esxi from running on broadcome to intel, but that made no difference. What do you mean by SC?

SC is the Service Console, but you have ESXi, so it means the Management Interface.

Try increasing the timeout values.

Thanks,

This is ESXi with VMware infrastructure client - there is no VCenter. In VMI client i did increase the time out from default to 2 minutes, but the connection is still dropped before the time out period expires...

Yary did you find a resolve to this issue? I'm having a very similar problem with the remote site ESXi host dropping into disconnected state and when trying to work with VMs on that machine it's VERY VERY SLOW. We have a 4Mbit link to a remote office with a site to site VPN with a ping response of about 15ms (Inter capital).

The VI Client itself also drops out.

VI Client 2.5.0 Build 147633 with same VirtualCenter build.

ESXi host build 153875

If I RDP to the remote VM directly it seems to operate fine but VMWare connectivity is a major problem.

We've seen some far more minor issues with remote hosts connected via a 4Mbit link as well but it's a remote site less than 10km away. Sometimes we get timeout responses when editing machine configurations etc. Anyhow please let me know.

Cheers,

Dave
