Upgrade from ESXi 3.5 to 4.1

Hi,

I'm trying to download the ESXi 4.1 (upgrade ZIP from ESXi 3.5) from the following link:

https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/index.php?p=free-esxi&lp=1

But, when I start the download in the download manager, I get the following error message in a pop up window:

"The requested file is not available for download. Contact the author of the page that contains the link. The download will be canceled."

Can someone please provide me the correct link to download the upgrade package (.zip) from ESXi 3.5 to 4.1?

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded it earlier using the web browser option and it worked great. I went in from the link below

http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vsphere_4/4

I would try the download again. Try it without using the Download Manager. The link directly below the Download manager button

That link won't work for the Free Version.

The original post link is correct.

Thanks. I just need to upgrade the ESXi from 3.5 to 4.1 such that my current VMs do not get affected. I'm using the method below to upgrade:

http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi40_upgrade_without_virtualcenter.php

The link that you provided has a lot of options, which one should I be downloading for this upgrade?

You can't use that link unless you have a paid license for ESXi. The link you posted is the correct one. You need to download the vSphere client and install it. During the install you will have the option to install the Host Update utility. Once you have that installed just follow the vm-help.com directions.

This is the link you posted

https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/index.php?p=free-esxi&lp=1 which is correct.

Thanks. I tried again from the 'manually download' option, and it did work. But, it downloaded a zipped file (VMware-tools-linux-8.3.2-257589.iso) with an .iso extension and when I try to upgrade the host from the VMware vSphere Host Update Utility, it is asking for a zipped file and not this one. Is this the correct file?

Ok, I downloaded the following:

Upgrade package from ESXi Server 3.5 to ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1

11/19/09 | 4.0 Update 1 | 284 MB | Binary (.zip)

It is a zipped file which the update utility is accepting. But, my question is regarding the license now:

When I follow the link below,

https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/p/activate.php?p=free-esxi&lp=1

it takes me to the download page, and it shows the message:

**Licensing

ESXi my license key

This license key is only valid for VMware ESXi 4.1 and later.**

Would my license key work for this package I just downloaded as it is 4.0 Update1 and the license message above seems to be working for 4.1 and later? Do I need another license key? If so, where can I get it from?

I will report the problem. You can try this in two stages if you need to get this done today. Use the update from 3.5 to 4 and then go from 4.0 to 4.1

Ok. I'm not doing the upgrade today. But, I may do it tomorrow, so doing the prep work today. Smiley Happy When do you expect the problem will be fixed so I can schedule accordingly? Please let me know and thanks for your help.

There are some downloads being added tonight I have heard.

I should have asked before whether you had checked the hardware compatibility list to make sure all your hardware is supported. There are devices that have been dropped from support.

Not sure what you mean by "It is on the HCL". Is the download available somewhere else? Or, I need to wait for the link problem to be fixed?

Your server is on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

The link needs to be fixed.
