How do I install the critical patch that was released this morning?

The typical way to apply patches to ESXi 3.5 hosts is through the

VMware Update Manager. For details, see the VMware Update Manager Administration Guide.

ESX Server 3i hosts can also be updated by downloading the most recent "O" (offline) patch bundle from and installing the bundle using Infrastructure Update through the VI Client or by using the vihostupdate command through the Remote Command Line Interface (RCLI). For details, see the ESX Server 3i Configuration Guide and the ESX Server 3i Embedded Setup Guide (Chapter 10, Maintaining ESX Server 3i and the VI Client) or the ESXi 3.5 Installable Setup Guide (Chapter 11, Maintaining ESXi 3.5 and the VI Client).

Im not buying update manager. I downloaded the zip file from vmware. I have VMI Client on my workstation. I need a step by step of how to install this update, because I have not found it in any documentation.

Shutdown all the VM's. The Update will reboot the ESXi host

1. Connect the VI Client to the host that needs to be updated.

2. Choose Start > Programs > VMware > VMware Infrastructure Update. (this is installed during the VI client install for ESXi)

3. On the Hosts tab, select the ESXi hosts to check for updates.

4. On the Updates tab, click Check Now.

5. Install the Update. This will download the Update.

6. Once the update is downloaded, will prompt for authentication for your ESXi host and install the update.

7. From VI Client, reboot the ESXi host

There is no VMI Update on my Start program

Well this sucks, I just rooled out new servers using the ESXi and now not one of them works. The "VMware Infrastructure Update" utility won't add the patch to its cache and the update utility won't connect to the VMware update server. I turned off all of our web filters and still nothing. I've redownloaded the patch. Everything I can think of the utilty just won't work for me. Is there another way besides buying Virtual Center?

Thank you, Ieonb6, I've been looking for that article all day. I tried it by my own, but not having any luck with the syntax of the commands I failed many times. I found that my actual problem was that the x86 emulation being used on the machine I have the VI client on was messing things up. So I used another client on another machine and it worked fine. Thank you for that link though I'm sure it will come in handy down the line.

If VMware Infrastructure Update is not installed, reinstall VMware Infrastructure Client and Select "VMware Infrastructure Update" during the install . Its part of that

Spot on. So I went and re-downloaded the update dated 8/12/8

Its a zip, in the update client under Package Cache I click Add Files, browse to it, and it says invalid file.

Im totally at a loss, Ive been at this for 12 + hrs today, and Ive yet to get an update to install.

If you choose the main zip that you download it says: Package does not contain applicable updates

But it also never extracts it to the local folder.

If you choose one of the 3 sub zip files under the main one it says invalid file.

If VMware Infrastructure Update is not installed, reinstall VMware Infrastructure Client, during the install there is a option to select to install "VMware Infrastructure Update"

Says No Updates Available.

Before you click on "Check Now" under Updates, do you see your host selected under host tab ?

If not close the VMware Infrastructure Update and open VMware client, login and then open VMware Infrastructure Update and see if the host is selected

I got mine to install. I had the zip file that I downloaded, on a CDROM. Pointing the vmware update program at the file on CDROM didn't work, however, copying the file to hard disk, and using it from there did work! Weird stuff.

I started VMI Update with them checked and unchecked and it doesnt matter, they both say No Updates Available.
