Hi all,
I have a production server with a standalone version of ESXi 3.5 Update2.
There is a couple (about 10) VMs running on it and stored on the local storage.
Which is the best procedure to upgrade that server to ESXi 4 ?
If I'll reinstall it from scratch, what about the VMs on the local datastore ?
Thank You
Bye

You need the vSphere host Update utility.
You should make sure you have a valid backup of the production servers, and use the Host Update Utility to upgrade from 3.5 to 4. There will be downtime while this happens so make sure you plan for that.
I've just tried with "VMware Infrastructure Update" but it told me that the package I've downloaded for update to a ESXi 4 is not a valid update package.
The "Vsphere Host update utility" told me that my ESXi 3.5 is not a valid host to update.

ooopps !
It's not a valid host to update ... but it's a valid host to upgrade !
Thank you and sorry .... I'm dumb !
What about Vs on local storage ? I think I can't backup all the VMs outside the box (i mean full level backup) prior to update ... Do you think it will be a safe operations ?
