Understanding ESXi

I'm just starting to get to grips with ESXi. I thought it might be beneficial for me to create a test lab. I currently use a macbook, so was thinking I could run ESXi within Fusion.

I was wondering if it would be better to build a ESXi server. Now I know I would need to get supported hardware, but I don't understand how networking works. This may be a silly question but can you use a wireless nic? I can't find an answer anywhere else. The sites Ive been to mention using a wired nic and then connecting it to a wireless router...

It is possible to install ESXi as a VM in Fusion http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-6590

No wireless NICs don't work. You can get reasonably priced server hardware for Dell HP or IBM etc or get a used version of same.

Hello LinuxTux

ESXi works different, if you have one Nic adapter, all your traffic goes for this adapter, then vmware has got some called service console (the management ip defined in the installation) used for administration pourposes.

Then you create VMs, every vm has got your own ip and mac, and all the vms, goes for the adapter you have defined in the virtual vswitch.
