Unable to install ESX3.5

Hello,

I am facing issues with ESXi 3.5 installation within workstation. I am using vmware workstation 7, workstation 7 supports ESXi but it doesnt support 32 bit it supports only 64bit, how to install 32 bit ESXi in workstation 7, is that available in 32 bit version if yes please give me the link and documents to install ESXi3.5 in vmware workstation 7.

What is vsphere ?

Let me know if any information required.

With regards,

Gopinath.

I can not help your with your workstation problem but vSphere is term referring to VMware's suite of products including the newest release of ESX/vCenter software similar to the way VMware Infrastructure 3 refered to suite of products including ESX 3.x and Virtul Cneter 2.x

Do a search in the ESXi 3.5 forums on "backdoor". I do believe you also need to make sure your hardware supports hardware virtualization and that it is enabled in the BIOS.

Hello All,

I want to set up a SAN environment using VMware for testing, i know it is possible with 64bit OS, but i am having only 32bit OS, in all the documents available in internet and vmware documentation refers to 64bit OS. I want to know if there is any way to download ESX 32bit even older version will help and is that possible to use VMSphere for this ? if it have 32 bit support. Is there any other product equivalent to ESX avaliable in market in 32bit to set up SAN ?

With Regards,

Gopinath

Hi,

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish. Connecting to a SAN within workstation is not going to work. Do you mean shared storage? That should be possible to achieve from within workstation. In that case, you should install at least two instances of ESX, and a third VM which can be an appliance that delivers iSCSI or NFS. The two ESX servers could access the NFS/iSCSI target which they'll consider as being shared storage. Even vmotion could be accomplished within workstation between the two nodes...

Hello,

Yes, i need to set up a shared storage setup for my personal testing purposes, but i have 32bit OS and my core 2 duo processor doest have VT capability, it seems ESX cant help me in this case. Could you suggest me any other alternate software that could work. Example: Microsoft Hyper - V.

Is that possible to set up shared storage with VMware Server ?

It seems VMSphere cant work in 32 bit, am i right ?

My set up details:

1) 3 VMs running Redhat 4 AS for DB2, Oracle,

2) 1 VM running Windows Server 2003 for DB2, Oracle, MS-SQL Server 2000,

3) 1 VM running Redhat 5 EE for TSM server,

4) 1 VM running Windows XP which is the client machine for DB2, Oracle, MS-SQL Server.

I planned to use ESX to set up shared storage so that i could test the fail over capability for my Databases.

I will be happy if atleast i would set up NAS.

your requirement is not clear

are you looking to setup shared storage for existing ESX?

if yes try with openfiler it is free iSCSI/NFS storage OS you can install on any server hardware/virtual machine either 32 bit or 64 bit

Could you suggest me any solution to set up shared storage for my VMs mentioned above. I just need to set up a SAN environment like in organisations for my own testing and development purpose. Is that i need to use ESX for installing openfiler ?

You could check out Storage Virtual appliances

http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/cat/511

Openfiler mentioned by nearly everyone else in thread has downloadable Virtual appliance version

http://www.openfiler.com/community/download/

It doesn't get much easier than that.

You state your CPU is not VT capable. If that is the case you won't be running two ESX instances plus a storage VM on it at all. I have done some ESX3.5 installs under workstation. Boot time without VT is about an hour (!!!). With a VT enabled CPU it is minutes.

Performance is just going to be so bad, it is not worth the effort...
