The file is too big for the file system

While installing a new Virtual Machine or add a new hard drive to ESXi, I receive and error saying "the file is too big for the file system". Could someone help with as to what this is and how to fix it?

how big is the HDD you are trying to add to your VM?

It may be an issue with the block size on your LUN(s)

1MB=256GB

2MB=512GB

4MB=1024GB

8MB=2048MB

The only way to change this is to reformat your VMFS partition. I've also had to resort in some cases to using dynamic volumes for a particular cluster where we could not reformat, and had no space left for a new datastore. Not the best option, but it was something that could be used without having to destroy and recreate your storage.
