Snmp, management and Dell Server

Hello,

i would like to setup DELL openmanage on my PowerEdge 2950 Rack, in order to receive hardware failure alert by the DELL machine, since i see that Esxi, into the "Health status" section, see correctly the hardware component.

Dell says that OpenManage is supported on ESX... perhaps someone has already tried to setup up it on Esxi?

Is there an alternative way to receive e-mail alert, or from DELL software or from VMware, about hardwarefailure?

Thank you, see ya!

You can setup SNMP traps (ESIi does not yet support gets) - http://communities.vmware.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&objectType=2&objectID=1016244. You won't be able to install an openmanage agent on ESXi as you would regular ESX. If you have a DRAC card you'll also want to look at OOB management with it.

Thank you Dave!

The only problem is that i cannot find out in my ESXi 3.5 this command: vicfg-snmp

I did a: find / | grep vicfg-snmp but there is no files, neither with esxcfg-snmp.

Thank you, regards!!!

Hi,

About SNMP it seems that free ESXi doesn't support SNMP Get queries.

You have to usse SNMPtrap or CIM (or alternatively SSH). They also

discussed about SNMP here : http://communities.vmware.com/message/1015191#1015191

Dell

released a document about managing ESXi with ITAssistant. Basically

you configure your ESXi to sens SNMP trap to ITAssistant. See document

There's an interesting discussion about monitoring hardware here :

I also release a Python script that I use with Nagios to monitor my PowerEdge servers :

It's part of the remote command line interface (RCLI) - http://www.vmware.com/download/download.do?downloadGroup=VI-RCLI-U2.

Hello,

just for complete "my training"... the remote CLI interface works on ESXi Server?

And, is virtual center needed or not?

Thank you again, best regards!

No you typically won't need Virtualcenter until you're managing a number of hosts or want to use features like HA and Vmotion. You will still use the VI client to connect directly to your host(s) for day to day management.

remote CLI interface works on ESXi Server?

It's a download for Linux or Windows (and there's also a Linux VM option) and you can use the RCLI with ESXi or ESXi. It provides some options to start scripting as well as commands like vifs (to copy files) and vmkfstools (to copy vmdk files).

yes it works on ESXi and no you don't need VC at all

you can take a look on this KB : http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1006543

Some features are disabled in the free ESXi if you want full featuers coverage you had to buy a license

Thank you again again, Dave!

The last question... does RemoteCLI need virtual Center or Esxi is enough?

Thank you, cheers!

No, no virtual center required. Download the rcli for windows package mentioned previously and install it on your windows desktop (or whereever you want to run these management scripts). I had to CD into the install folder , there was no start menu items for this. Should be intuitive once you poke around

As stated, you don't need VC but can run it directly to ESXi. With the free edition, some portions of the RCLI are read-only. There's a windows / Linux install for the RCLI or you can download an appliance - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Import_RCLI_Appliance.html.
