Simple (?) hints to increase performance

I am old enough to know that performance tuining on any computing environment is an hard matter and that you must spend time and study to get real improvements.

However, I presume that in ESXi (as well as in other computing environments) there are some basic actions you can perform and some basic mistakes you can avoid in order to increase performance of guest VMs: can anybody please suggest any action and/or check to perform in order to just start increasing performance, before starting a more in depth analysis and optimization?

Regards

Marius

The first step is the gathering of facts. Perfmon on windows is a start. top on linux/unix. esxtop on esxi Dump statistics from the VI client or vcenter. You can't adjust anything without knowing what direction you need to twist the screw.
