Hi,
We are looking for a remote shutdown command for ESX 3i installable, without access to the VI Client.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Tom
No access to the iLO / DRAC card of the servers ?
Thanks for the reply.
We have no ILO or DRAC card. It's a self build INTEL Server.
This is the exact problem:
We are doing a major project for a company. The server is attached to a UPS. When the power breaks down, the UPS takes over for 30 minutes. Right before the UPS goes down, the UPS sends an event to the server and all other servers. When the event comes in the servers have to shutdown properly. But with ESX 3i you can't configure anything on the host machine. So we would like to shutdown the ESX 3i from another server on top of the host ESX.
Any further ideas?
Thanks,
Tom
Hi,
And what happens if you issue a "shutdown" in the RCLI appliance? Does it only shutdown the RCLI?
Sorry haven't tried 3i yet, so can't test it here.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Haven't tested the RCLI appliance yet. I only installed Remote CLi on a windows server. But I can't find a shutdown command there.
Will test RCLI appliance now, will get back to you.
Thanks,
Tom
I've found hostops.pl . but this seems only to work when you use virtual center. We have a standalone ESX 3i :(.
Does anyone have an answer for me...
Thanks
Tom
Wullie,
Any luck with this? I am looking at the same issue.
I am thinking of using an APC UPS that has a USB connection. I would prefer to be able to connect the UPS USB cable into the ESX3i host.

Take a look at this script: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9531

Cheers,
This looks good apart from the 3.5 Update 4 stuff ;o)
Seeing in my scenario I also have a physical server with a UPS connected (terminal server) my though was to:
Install Powershell & VI Toolkit on terminal server
When terminal server starts shutting down due to a power outage I'll make it run a powershell script to shutdown the esx3i host (an the VM's running on it).
Hello,
Moved to ESXi forum.
