Problem with iSCSI Virtual Machines

Hello, I am new to ESXi, I just installed 3.5 U4.

I went into settings, turned on iSCSI, attached to my software SAN (tried both starport, and iSCSI cake). I created a virtual machine with the "raw" hdd type, selected my LUN. When I try to boot the machine I get a single "_" in the console. I don't see a POST screen.

In my loggs I see messages like this

Task Created : haTask-ha-host-vim.DiagnosticManager.browse-66

Task Completed : haTask-ha-host-vim.DiagnosticManager.browse-66

These message go from 45-960, at 960 the system seemed to freeze. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this issue?

I just retried with the same messages, but started at a lower number in the 20's

What do you want to achieve with this kind of setup?

Do you have an already configured operating system on that lun?

Usually you would activate iSCSI and then create a datastore with a VMFS on it.

Then you would use this datastore to create virtual machines on it.

Thanks for the response, I was using a local datastore, and tried mapping an iSCSI lun as a drive for a virtual XP machine.

the XP machine was hanging at boot, but I think that was due to changing the HDD controler type.

I created a datastore on the iSCSI LUN, and it worked fine, thanks.

FYI, the errors I was getting had nothing to do with my iscsi problem, I think that isjust a bug when navigating to the error log.
