New Guest servers unable to connect to network

Hi

Over the past week I have been creating virtual server using ESXi 3.5 on a Dell Poweredge T605.

I created 2 Windows 2003 server, no problem.

I tried creating a 3rd and 4th but they will not connect to the network and cannot see the domain controller.

Also tried to setup a virtual XP workstation - also unable to connect to the network card.

I have no idea why the last 3 PC's have network card issues.

Any help appreciated

Steve

Are they connected to the same vswitch as the 1st and 2nd VM?

Hi mate,

Can you post your network config (screendump from the Networking config page of your ESX host through VI).

Also - can you tell us a bit about your IP configuration - are you using statics? DHCP? from which server? Can you post some ipconfigs from the working VMs and the failing VMs?

Lastly if you post a screen dump of your VM hardware settings (especially for the virtual NIC) from a working and failing machine.

Cheers,

Dan

  • Have you allocted a NIC to each of these VMs

  • If you right click each VM and go edit settings, and select the NIC, are they all connected to the same Switch/portgroup (dropdown)?

  • Is the little check box 'connected' checked?

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

Hi there

Thanks for responding

Sorry - what is a VSWITCH?

I have done no sexy config here, it is just basic adding a server and 'click click click' through the options with no additional config - here are some screenshots

Hi

Thanks for responding

Please see the attached. Am tyrying to use DHCP but it just looks like a network card failure - which obviously it isn’t so there must be some sort of config within VMWare to allow the host servers network card to be 'shared' amongst guest servers...maybe!

If you specify an address manually on one of the non-working hosts, can you ping other VMs?

i.e. specify 192.168.0.250, 255.255.255.0, DG 192.168.0.254

then try to ping another VM by IP address

if that works try to ping the DG by IP address.

Please award points to any useful answer.

BTW conceptually ESXi attaches a switch to your physical switch, using the physical NIC for connection - this is the vSwitch.

Your VMs are then connected to that vSwitch too, hence my questions above.

You need to make sure your VMs are connected to a suitable port group on a suitable vSwitch - it looks like basic IP / DNS isn't in place.

Screenshot your network config and your vm settings...
