Hi,
I have a problem with our second VI. I use for storage a IBM DS3400 at Cisco MDS 9124 and for ESX 3.5 IBM x3650 with qLogic HBA. If I reboot a ESX server (for example for updates) I got warnings on the DS3400 for some LUNs "Logical Drive not on preferred path". Everthing runs good, but I must correct the path on the DS manually.
On our old VI with a IBM DS4700 I got the same problem. It's very annoying and I think that can't be correct. I check VMware and IBM documentation for special configuration issues. But nothing found.
Anyone an idea? Is it normal for IBM DS or is there a special configuration I don't found?
Thanks for help! Robert
Robert,
We also have the IBM DS3400 and Storage Manager 2 used to keep reporting the same issue... This has however stopped happening, I think I fixed it by making sure the Controller Owner is set the same as the Preferred Path;
In Storage Manager 2 -
Choose Modify, Change Logical Drive Ownership/Preferred Path from here change the Controller Owner to the same as Preferred Path
Good Luck
Hi NHCdmont,
you're right, changing the Controller Owner on the DS fix the problem. That's what I mean with "but I must correct the path on the DS manually".
But it works only until the next reboot of an ESX server. After that all drives ownerships are on one controller, for example A. And for all drives with preferred path on B (in example) will be a warning intiated.
What happend on a reboot of an ESX server?
After re-reading your post and reply, I understand a bit better...
Had a look on google for this and came across
A few other postings were also mentioning AVT needs to be disabled...
Also check your ESX Storage configuration, vmhba properties, managed paths and check if your pointing to the correct path coresponding with your IBM SAN..
I'll have a better dig about tomorrow and post any findings, hope the above link helps...
Okay, perhaps I missunderstand this, but the Redbook (on page 716) said, that AVT is disabled if the host type is LNXCLVMWARE. And my hosts are defined to that.
But I'm not sure what you mean with "pointing to the correct path coresponding with your IBM SAN". How can I do that, I've had a look in the vmhba path settings and I don't know what you mean. Do you mean the policy? But IBM DS3400 supports only "Most recently used". You can read this in the support guide on page 59.
