Just installed 9.10 desktop on vmware esxi - no network connection

I try to set it to use eth0 and it doesn't work - tells me that it is disconnected. Settings on vmware are default, it should be providing a wired ethernet connection for the guest to pick up but it doesn't seem to work. Windows server 2008 guest was able to pick up a network connection easily. I haven't used linux in a while so I really don't know where to start here.

Which NIC type is set for VM? Are VMware Tools installed?

Wow, I can't even install vmware tools. It's complaing: "None of the pre-built pvscsi modules for vmware tools is suitable for your running kernel" and wants to compile it, but I don't have a c compiler installed.
