Is there a way to upload a file from host DVD to local datastore

As per subject; can this even be done?

Host is ESXi 3.50, I have a large ISO image that I need to upload to the datastore but it's too big to transfer over WAN using VI client from mgmt station or FastSCP.

Suggestions welcome Smiley Happy

ESXi has limited function and mount is one of this limit.

I haven't spend too much time on it but I think that it's not possible mount a CD.

As Andre says you can't mount a CD . . . BUT you can mount an NFS share.... So setup an NFS target, upload the files to the NFS mount, and you can install from that NFS mount.

I found a simple but brilliant way to achieve this...

Edit the settings of a VM running on the ESXi host and change the CD/DVD Drive device type to 'Host Device' and status to 'Connected'

Insert CD with ISO image/file into host DVD drive

Install VI Client into the VM guest OS and connect to the ESXi host

Browse Datastore and Upload ISO image from the host DVD

Job done!
