Is There A Free Partitioning Software that Works with VMWare?

I want to resize a Windows 2008 system volume. What software or utilities can I use for this.

use diskpart, it's built into windows.

Or something like ExtPart

As I understand, diskpart doesn't work with system volumes.

It's an executable, will it work within the OS?

yes. Download extpart, copy it to the C: drive of the server in question. Open a command prompt and type

extpart c: 2048

This will extend the volume by. Say you have a 20GB C: Drive and you want to go to 22GB, that is the command you use.

Also, check out

...just in case you don't know. don't extend the drive it the guest has a snapshot.

I'm trying to extend the system volume that the OS is running off of. As I understand it, the OS locks the system drive to prevent corruption. I've tried tools like Gparted and other free linux-based partition tools and they can't even recognize the HDDs in the VM.

use extpart, trust me it will work. First extend out the HDD in the VIC to the size you want. Then, within the guest OS, you will see some unallocated space. Run extpart to extend out the OS volume.... done.

Expart returns an error. Unable to connect to C:

I got the Windows utilility (diskpart) to work. Maybe I was confused about the system volume thing.
