Installing ESX 3.5 in a VM on ESX 3.5

I'm running ESX 3.5 update 2 and I'd like to setup a ESX 3.5 VM to test some different configurations. I've seen lots of examples of running ESX on a Workstation VM but strangely I haven't found any examples of what I'm trying to do, although I did see one thread about running ESX 4.0 on ESX 3.5, but no details on setup steps.

I created the VM as Other 64-bit with 4 CPUs and 16GB RAM, and the E1000 NIC. After settingup the VM I edited the vmx file to add

monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE

monitor_control.vt32 = TRUE

just like in the workstation examples I saw online.

The install went fine, but when I'm running the VM it pegs all 4 CPUs constantly and runs really slow. Is this an impossible setup or is there something else I need to tweak? If there is another thread that answers this please point me to it.

ESX 3.5 does not support 32-bit VT. You need an AMD64 host with AMD-V support. See .
