How to get started?

I'm thinking about using the free version of VMWare ESXi for development purposes. Currently, my development machine is running Vista 64 bit. Do I need to start over -- meaning rebuild the machine or can I add VMWare on top of the Vista installation?

Thanks,

Sam

It should install on top of vista no problem, check out the product page for more information though - http://vmware.com/products/server/overview.html

ESX3i installable is something you install on the bare metal so a reinstall would be necessary. If you just need to have a few VMs to play with VMware Server is free and installs on top of windows.

Like the previous user said ESXi installs onto bare hardware like an operating system so you would have to rebuild. The issue with that comes if your hardware will work with ESXi since its not on the HCL. If you wanted to persue this path you should check out www.vm-help.com and they have a lot of whiteboxes and non-hcl hardware that has been user tested to work at this point in time. Also vmware server or workstation would be a great way to try some development purposes. Our company bought a couple of workstation licenses and I've used it quite a bit with testing server builds, applications etc... You can build out a template and just create a handful of servers in minutes.

Unless you're looking to handle something a bit more powerful or move to esxi in the long run, for testing and development vmware server or vmware workstation (a little more powerful than server) would be great for you.

VMWare Server sounds like the right solution then. Would it install on top of Vista 64 bit?

No problem, good luck with your dev on VM Server, if you have any questions regarding server you should post it in their section - http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/server they can help you out quite a bit better over there

See if server works on 64 bit

http://www.vmware.com/products/server/faqs.html - If you look at the section What does 64-bit operating system support mean? it shows that it installs on 64bit hosts OS's
