Hello,
I am trying to get vmware tools installed on a Ubuntu server that we have created in VMware. I have found several resources on the internet that mention using VMwareTool-.tar.gz from the CD Rom. When I look at the disks that we have created from the .iso images we have downloaded, I do not see any VMwareTool-.tar.gz for version 3.5. I have been able to find an old version of VMwareTool-*.tar.gz for version 3.0. However, if I install this on a system I see that the vmware tools I installed is showing as being out of date.
Where can I find VMwareTool-*.tar.gz that is not going to be out of date if I install it on a linux box?
Thank you
Eric Lommatsch
Remove the physical CDROM. This is a virtual CDROM. You can also look at
dmesg to see how the other CDROM is presented and mount that one.
/dev/cdrom1 ?

Start the process from the VMware Client. Right click on the ubuntu VM and select the install upgrade. That will present the "CD" to the ubuntu VM. You will / may need to mount the cdrom in ubuntu. From there you can copy / untar the tools to the ubuntu disk. From the expanded directory run the installer. You will need to do this from the VI client since the installer will replace networking components.
Since you are new to this I would spend a while with the documentation or use some of the VMware resources to get familiar with some of the procedures.
For installation Tools in any linux vm,This link would be helpful :

Thanks for the reply, But that is the problem I have. Where can I find the tools at? When I look at the vmware disk I see no files for vm tools that I can copy/untar.
Thanks for your reply. I believe I have looked at the resources that you have listed.
My problem is that when I get to step 4. the CDRom I have has no "vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz" for me to untar
You must select "Install Upgrade VMware tools" from within the VI client. (Right click on the unbuntu VM left side list) You should get a Popup dialog that extols the virtues of installingthe tools. You should see the process begin in the Recent Tasks panel in the VI client. Switch to the Console tab for the unbuntu VM.
From within the unbuntu
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
cp vmtools???.tgz /tmp
etc.
I realize this and I am doing this.
From within the unbuntu
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
I am doing this as well.
cp vmtools???.tgz /tmp
Here is where the problem is at, where do I find vmtools???.tgz.tar for my version of VMware? Here is the listing of the files that are on my CDRom. I see no vmtools???.tgx.tar on the disk.

Hi ,
Can you please go check -->Right click on the vm -->edit setting of the >Select the General option tab>Check the Guest operating type.
I think you have selected the GOS type windows ,That's may be a reason you are not seeing tar.
Hope this would be helpful....
Ok, Maybe I didn't pay close enough attention to the documentation. ( this is always possible) or the documentation wasn't clear. the fact that it was a virtual CDROM was exactly the information that I needed to know.
Hi Eric,
Amit is rt, u have selected a windows GOS while creating a VM. Change it to Ubuntu and try the steps mentioned to get the tgz fle.
Thx,
Selva
I have actually finished installing vmware tools. The only thing I needed to know to get this done was that there was a virtual CDROM.
No, GOS was linux, I just didn't know that there was a virtual CDRom
