A Dell PowerEdge with Dual Quad Core Xeon Processors and 32GB RAM was recommended to install an ESXi host for the following vms: SharePoint Server 2007, SQL Server 2005, Domain Controller, Exchange Server. At most I might install 3 more vms on this host.
I believe that this server has been over-speced. Right? I imagine this server has the capacity to host 20-30vms.
Since I want to leverage Windows Clustering for redundancy and load balancing wouldn't I be better off buying 2 Dell Servers with half of the memory and processor cores, installing a Sharepoint Cluster and a SQL Server Cluster (with 1 vm per host), and by connecting the Sql Servers cluster to a shared storage.
