Hello
I was wondering if ESX3.5i supports the HP DL line of servers with SAS hard drives?
TIA
The main this is that the controller is recognized (SAS or SATA don't really matter).
You can get ESXi to install on listed IDE controller if you make a change in the install process - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive.php
First, check the following document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_systems_guide.pdf. If you don't find your answer there, check the ESX Whitebox HCL: http://www.vm-help.com. If you haven't found it there, either, then search this forum and see if anyone else has had any success with it.
What type of storage controller do these machines have?
Yes they should both ESX 3.5 and ESXi, but you'll want to verify the model on VMware's HCL for hardware which can be found at: http://www.vmware.com/resources/guides.html
Hi
Yes absolutely...no problems.
Check the compatibility guide from VMWare at
http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vi_pages/vi_pubs_35_3i_i.html

As Nick has already pointed too your first place of call should be the HCL, that said, I have had no issues running 3.5 on DL360 G4. G4p and G5 all these have SAS drives

So if i read the following link: http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Hardware_support.php
If i get a DL360 G5 with SATA drives that would work? I see they have links on getting ESX3.5i to run on IDE, and sounds like basically i just need my controller to be supported to use other drive options? Is this true? or do i HAVE to use SAS drives?
Thanks again in advance!
Yes, it should work with SATA drives. Usually the controllers don't see SATA and SAS drives any differently (at least my Dell PE1950s don't).
