Fan noise at all time on R900

I have installed ESXi 3.5 on Dell R900.

But fan won't stop or reduce the speed.

Does any one know how to control or reduce the

Be sure to update the BIOSAND the BMC.

You can download the update from Dell site (download the linux version).

It's in the bios, not at the ESX level. Check the bios to ensure that the fan is set to a normal threshold, and that the ambient temperature isn't hot. If you can't find it, call Dell. This isn't an ESX problem.

thank you.

I am having a hard time updating the BIOS.

I don't have a floppy device.

I tried systems build and utilty, but would not boot from DVD.

Then I tried to make bootable CD, but could not figure out format.

Now, I downloaded the BIOS 1.1.10 "Update Package for Red Hat Linux"

from Dell and burned it to a CD.

Could you tell me how to install it with this?

You can update BIOS and firmware without floppy or CD.

Just download the file PER900_BIOS_LX_1.1.10_1.BIN and the file PER900_BMC_FRMW_LX_R196416.BIN

Copy them in your serive console, then you have only to lanch the binary.

The BIOS upgrade start only from the next reboot, the BMC update start immediately (and put the fan temporally to max rpms)

thanks much Andrea,

Please advise me a bit more.

I'm using free ESXi 3.5 and VMware Infrastructure Client.

1. I did download both BIOS, and Firmware on my desktop pc.

How can I copy these files to server console?

I don't have RCLI.

I could not fine a way.

2. How do I launch the binary?

your advice will be highly appreciated.

Use winscp to transfer the files to your ESX (but you have to enable user root to ssh).

Then connect locally on your console with user root (CRTL+2) to see the login prompt and lunch the update.

that being said, the BIN files probably WONT run under ESXi

you shoudl get teh bootable CDROM versions.

Even then, the R900 is a BIG box, and its fans are going to be on all the time (we have a bunch of them). They are loud and on all the time.

Probably it works also in ESXi.

If it doesn't work you have to use the upgrade DVD (very uge) form .

thanks both of you.

I am very disappointed to hear what you said.

I updated the BIOS by using FDD.

But have not updated firmware.

I tried to update it with SUU, but did not boot.

I could not find anything to control FAN speed on BIOS.

It's got 8 FANS, and I understand I shuold expect this noise.

But too loud.

I was hoping there would be some ways to control FANs speed.

At this point the best solution may be to open a issue to Dell support.

Did you attempt a support call to Dell?

Also the fan speed should be visible in the Dell support page on that ESX host. What speed are the fans running at. And did you notice that immediately upon booting the machines, ALL the fans run at fastest speed. If they don't spin down once the OS starts to boot, then its a problem. If they do spin down, they yes maybe that's all this is, 8 fans is loud in a quiet room.. but its a matter of tolerance. Those machines should be in a rack, and usually its environmentally controlled, so you wouldn't 'hear' those fans because all the systems are making the same noises.

All 8 FANs were running before updating firmware of the R900.

Now on the VI Clients console, I see 4 Fans are running at 5500rpm,

(fan speeds are about the same as before)

and the rest are not running (Fully redundant).

It worked, and I think the fan noise is still loud but a bit reduced

from the point of booting.

This is what I did;

1.Insert SBUU disk into R900 and boot

2.select menu

3 change the disk to SUU DVD

4 update firmware

5 reboot

Thanks a lot everyone.
