Error powering on vm: A file was not found

I ran into this error after trying to rename a virtual disk using vmkfstools. After registering a vm and trying to power it on, I get the error "A file was not found". In the datastore browser of the Virtual Infrastructure client, the disk file is no longer recognized as a virtual disk and the .vmdk file no longer points to the flat file. Is there any way to recover from this?

You can view the .vmdk file since it is just text. See where it points. Did you recreate the VM. Make sure the vmx file is correct as well.

You could try creating a new VM and attaching the existing disks - if this works it would suggest an issue with you vmx file, if this doesn't work then it would suggest the vmdk text file contains an error in which case a simple grep command may help you find the fault...

grep "Old VMDK file name" vmdkname.vmdk
