ESXi and UPS

I am planning to implement ESXi on an HP DL385 server.

Does ESXi manage an UPS?

Given the DL385 server is connected to an external UPS and power fails, can ESXi detect the problem and perform a graceful shutdown (or suspend) of guest Virtual Machines?

ESXi doesn't have a console that you would use to install any UPS software. The usual recommendation is run the RCLI virtual machine appliance and install the UPS agent in there. Then have tthe RCI appliance shutdown ESX.

Another "solution" (assuming you are using an APC UPS) is to wait for the new APC software which will (from what I understand) install an agent in VIMA which will then shut down the guests and the host.

The following is cut from a post in the VIMA newsgroup.

Good Afternoon,

PowerChute Network Shutdown for VMware ESXi will be available in 2009.

This is a fully compatible version with VIMA and ESXi.

I had thought I had seen a statement some where that it would be the 1st quarter of 2009 (but I may be confused with the next version of Veeam Backup which is also due soon).
