Hey guys...
I just wanted to see how many people have upgraded their servers to the new Update 3 which came out on Nov. 6 and how their upgrade went. I have only seen one post in the ESXi forums so far with an issue so I wanted to see if everyone is updating yet and how it went.
So far I have upgraded two Dell PE2950's (no vm's were on them yet so it wasnt a good test), with no issues.
Jonathan
So far I've been unable to upgrade on my test machine, a Dell PowerEdge SC440. ESXi Update 2 installed just fine and works great (other than the fact that Ubuntu 8.10 guests are iffy), but ESXi Update 3 just stops with "Installation operation Failed!". It says it's unable to find a supported device to write the VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 image to - even though Update 2 exists and boots fine if I take the install CD out.
Updated my whitebox no issues, updated pe2850 no issues all vm's ok so far...
Lost my two local SATA VMFSs - http://communities.vmware.com/message/1094410
But now back again thanks to this article:
You don't actually want to use the CD to upgrade to update 3. The only options for the CD are a repair or new install. For ESXi standalone, you can use one of these methods to update your host - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Patch_3i_without_VC.html.
upgraded my whitebox... no issues at all...went pretty smooth so i am happy..
shut down the machines
enter maintanance mode
update through VIU
Restarted ESXi
Datastore and all the machines were all intact
exit maintanance mode
Resarted VM's and they started just fine
:smileycool: good luck to all the rest of you who'll be upgrading.
Upgraded my HP Proliant ML110 G5 fine with no problems via the VMWare Infrastructure Update utility today, took 10 minutes, maybe less to complete.
Updated ESX, restarted, restarted the VM's, installed the new VMWare Tools.
So far so good. No problems with datastores, VM's disappearing, just worked fine.
Chris.
Thanks for the responses guys, just wanted to start a tally of how everyone's upgrades went!
Some of you put your host's in maintenance mode before applying the upgrade, does everyone do that? (I actually never have, just applied the updates).
Just wondering about my above question....if people put their servers in maintenance mode before applying updates to your servers?
Since like this update has some positive feedback. Guess the DEV/QA pay more attention on their code. Going to try to build two with my spare blades. Thanks for the feedback.
I don't think you can load the patches or updates without putting the machine in maintenance mode. I've always put the server in maintenance mode because that's what the instructions said. Anyway, I built a ESX 3.5 U3 server from scratch and migrated VMs over from a ESXi 3.5 U2 server without any problems (Generic Linux 2.4 kernel machines and Vista 32-bit). I also upgraded a ESXi 3.5 U2 server to U3 without any issues (Ubuntu 8.04, generic Linux 2.4 kernel, and Server 2008). I know, not much rhyme or reason to the upgrades, it just wat I had in a test environment.
I have it running on two 'new' machines, fresh installs with three VM's on each. I am going to upgrade a smaller server this weekend. See how it goes, but this update 'refresh' seems pretty solid.
Updated via Infrastructure Update, No Issues.
I didn't put mine in maintenance mode before updating. Updat seemed to work fine. Rebooted, everything is where it should be.
Personnaly I'm waiting for chrismas before upgrading ...
Maybe a developper has put a gift on the license date
hahaha yeah a nice 'gift' for us all....and get yelled at by management!
Tried updating 3 hosts (downloaded the latest patch/update, U3, from the downloads page to my desktop - updating procedure for all three hosts is the same: no VMs, and put to maintenance mode):
1 Dell PE2950 - using VIU - SUCCESSFULL
2 Dell R905s - using VIU - FAILED. At the VIU screen it shows "Installing: firmware update for U3 release 70%" and at the VIC it's stuck at task "Install" at 25%. Both hosts are doing the same thing. One host has no VMFS datastore and the other does (local) - both same results. Waited as long as 2 hours, no dice.
Any ideas? - Sorry I don't mean to threadjack, but if I don't see any replies, I'll post up a different posting.
Thanks!
Have a great day.
