ESXi 3.50 Issues

I have successfully downloaded and installed

ESXi 3.50 update 3 build 123629 on an HP

DL120 G5 system using the downloaded iso file

VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD-3.5.0_Update_3-123629.i386.iso.

1.

This distribution from the file name extension seems to imply that it

is for a 16 bit architecture. Is this the reason why I cannot install

RHEL 5 for x86_64? The HP hardware is 64 bit capable (Intel E4600

chip). Does the 32 bit ESXi hypervisor support 64 bit virtual machines

hosted under it?

2.

If I wanted to update ESXi 3.50 to a new update/build, how would that

be done? I tried to reinstall ESXi 3.50 update 4 build 153875, but

that failed with a fatal error concerning no place found to install

it. Do I have to do something drastic like reformat the disk to get

rid of the currently installed ESXi?

3.

Why can I not connect to the CD/DVD drive in the physical machine and

use a RHEL5 kickstart boot disc to install the O/S? The only thing

that works it to use the iso image of the kickstart boot disc that has

been uploaded to the ESXi server machine.

Make sure intel VT is enabled in the BIOS

It may be that you will need to update storage related firmware. Update 4 is kind of new so HP may not have got arround to clearing a bug on the storage controller on this model.

If it is a SATA CD/DVD there are known issues with these drives with ESX/ESXi check vendor support page for updates.

There is no such setting in the BIOS that I can find. Since I have installed RHEL5 64-bit on a second piece of identical hardware without ESXi, I have to assume that ESXi is making the virtual machine appear as a 32-bit.

a. Why I cannot install RHEL 5 for x86_64?

b. Does the apparent 32 bit ESXi hypervisor support 64 bit virtual machines hosted under it?

Confused. I am trying to update from update 3 (already installed) to update 4 (disc in CD tray). Is there no ESXi update process?

You won't update ESXi to update 4 with the install CD -
