ESX3.5 host network failover detection

In VirtualCenter, under the VM Network properties/Policy Exceptions, the default network failover detection is "Link Status only"....but, there is another option called "beacon probing". What is the advantages of each? I'm thinking that Beacon Probing would help us identify a failing NIC on the HOST.
