VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 4 Installable Edition with OM 6.0.3

These images are

customized by Dell and includes Dell OpenManage Server Administrator

version 6.0.3 as part of the ESXi image. For detailed instructions to

enable and use Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, please refer to

the Dell OpenManage support documents at http://www.support.dell.com/

Has anyone tried this yet? Its listed as compatible with all PE servers on the ESXi HCL.

Yeah it will.. I have a R710 on the way. I can't wait to see how they implemented this. There are dozens of posts on how to manage hardware with esxi, its great to see this.

Also, supposedly for current installs you can download open manage 6.0.3 and install it on a local machine and connect to your esxi host to view hardware status. I was reading the admin guide, looks cool going to try it out tommorrow.

Looks like I may be wrong. I have been playing with this for a while here, looks like you definitly need the custom install that dell provides with OM Agent slipstreamed. From the way the User Guide explains it you should be able to enable OEMCIM.Agents under advanced and it should work, but up farther in the user guide it states you need an agent installed. Wonder if there is a way to install just the agent...

Here is the users guide since its IMPOSSIBLE to find anything on their crappy site...

Sorry!!!!!! Smiley Happy You know Dell and their user guides...they suck! (plus impossible to find).

I wonder how Dell is going to support this, say an update comes out for ESXi that kills the OM Agent, how are we going to update the OM agent to support the newest version of ESXi??

a little known tidbit about Dell. Their support team actually has a direct communication with VM Ware upper level support, and they can fix / support more issues than the VM Ware help desk, that's where I get most of my help, plus I rarely have to wait and definitely don't have to get a call back. Dell fixed problems when VM Ware had no clue.

So you are actually in better hands with Dell IMHO, than anyone else. That's the main reason I prefer Dell. So the answer to that question is...

coming up after this commercial break!

I've looked into both image files. (Dell & VMware ESXi U4) They are the same build. The only difference is the 2MB oem.tgz in the Dell package, which I believe after extraction could be used on any running ESXi U4. (Guess these steps are not supported, but since Dell was a little bit late with their release I already put the native version on several production Dell servers)

Has anyone gotten this to work for them? I installed the ESXi version from Dell on a new R710 today, I tried to login to it via the Openmanage page and it fails. Invalid login. Anyone get this to work?

Hi,

Here are few things i know

1)Customized OM 6.0.3 will work only from ESXi 3.5 U4. You cannot use oem.tgz file with pervious versions.

2) when you apply a patch for you current running ESXi version, patch will contain the latest OM bits for that release. so no need to worry:) .

3) Regarind invalid login.

Have u enabled cimoemproviders in VC.

How are you trying to login to OM

Let me know

Thanks

Installed the Dell customized on a PE 1850 and everything worked fine no problems and the Dell managment works great,, Cant wait to get my T610 to put it on.. Just have to figure out when I get it how to install it on the CF card inside .. Should not be to hard as it may see it as a HD?? not sure... Thanks for the location to download it I have had much success so far..

Skip

Update:

Got the Dell T610 at lunch time, Installed this custom build on the cf card, turned it on and its up like a dream. I guess spending some money for a hearty server pays for itself.. Its all working like a well oiled machine..

Hi.

I have two R900 that I updated to U4 using Update Manager.

Unfortunately I found out that the Dell agents where not installed. No DELL files where available at the filesystem.

I could only fix this by "repairing" the installation with the DELL ESXi custom CD.

The strange thing is that the Dell agents (dell.tgz) are included in the official patch file from VMware.

Is there any alternative to this, that can lead me to a ESXi with the proper DELL agents? How can I manually install the patch I get from VMware?

Thanks.

Hi,

From which version of 3.5 did you update from.

Getting these DELL agents depends on the previous version.

Thanks

If you look into the install.sh of any recent patch you will find that

the patch installer checks for md5sum and version of the oem.tgz that is

already on the installed system. (In /bootbank)

If it finds a matching checksum, it simply puts the appropriate version

to /altbootbank/oem.tgz. It performs updates of the oem.tgz as well if

necessary, but it won't update from generic oem.tgz to dell.tgz.

That step you have to do manually by extracting the oem.tgz from the

dell installer.

Is it possible for anybody to tell me how to manually install the DELL oem.tgz?

Thanks.
