CentOS / ESXi 3.5 / VMWare Infrastructure
I have deleted some snapshots just above the current one, and upon googling this I did not see this to be an issue. But now I have lost root access and basic access through my created users, they are missing from the /etc/passwd file. All the factory users are there, can any of this be salvaged? The server's services (MySQL, PHP, etc) appear to be functional otherwise.
Now when I revert to my saved snapshot, my username says "I have no name!" and whoami says cannot find name for user ID 500, and there is no user ID 500 in the passwd file of course (any longer). Oddly enough, my home folder still exists in /home/<username>

I changed the root password by following this: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/ResetRootPassword
Everything seems to be fine, but does anyone know what happened?
