Converting vmware server 2.0 image to esxi 3.5 failed

I have a vmware server 2.0 image that i tried to convert to esxi 3.5 using vmkfstools using below procedure:

1) Use WinSCP or FastSCP to copy the file to a directory on the server

2) Login to ESX server

3) cd /vmfs/volumes/MyVolume/MyServer

4) vmkfstools -i Win2ksource.vmdk Win2Knew.vmdk

5) Once conversion is complete you can delete the original Win2ksource.vmdk

6) Create a new VM, tell it to use existing and browse to /vmfs/volumes/MyVolume/MyServer/Win2Knew.vmdk

when i do this i get following error:

'one or more of the disks used by this virtual machine was created by an unsupported version of vmware esx server. to power on the virtual machine,

either remove the unsupported disk(s) or use a version of vmware esx server that supports this version of disks. below is a list of the disks and their

reported versions

version 7 /vmfs/volumes/'

this was done from within esxi 3.5 so wondering why it's reporting this.

Welcome to the community.

You must use VMware Standalone Converter, because VMware Server 2.0 format is not compatible with old ESX/ESXi 3.x

What would be the procedure for that. I tried copying the vmware server vmdk to a seperate directory and running converter against that but i get a 'unable to obtain hardware information' message. thanks

You can install the Convert on the VMware Server machine.

Yes i did that. i installed converter on the vmware server machine. made a copy of the running virtual machine's vmdk to another folder and ran converter against that. should i shut down the running virtual machine and run converter against the live vmdk's? thanks

Yes... power-off the VM, and try to use the original files.

Which version of the Converter are you using? For old OS (like Windows 2003) could be better use the old Converter (3.0.3).

It's 4.3 version. It's actually a windows 200 advanced server image. I didn't want to do that originally because i didn't want to lose the original vmware server vmdk's incase something went wrong in the conversion. I guess i'll just shut the vm down, copy the image folders from the virtual machine directory to another folder, run the converter on the live vmdk's. then if something goes wrong i'll copy the saved folder back to the virtual machines folder and restart the vmware server image. Sound good. thanks again

You have an old OS, you must use the old Convert (download the 3.0.3).
