Converting Live Physical system

Just wondering if anyone is able to let me know if when trying to convert a Live physical system to a virtual system on an ESXi server, whether traffic through the live system will be shutdown/interrupted.

Or plan is to move one of our Firewalls to the virtual environment, then we can re-deploy the server for another task, if traffic is shutdown through this system during the conversion this maybe something that will have to be down after hours????

Thanks in advance for your Knowledge. Smiley Wink

Cheers

If you're doing an online conversion then traffic from the physical system will not be shutdown/interrupted, however you will likely see some performance impact as there will be additional network traffic as data is copied, etc. If the physical system is lightly/moderately loaded this is unlikely to be a significant issue, but you may want to do it off hours to avoid any user impact...

Hi,

There is no difference in speed between using hot cloning and the cold clone boot CD. The difference lies in (a) whether the machine is up and running-- for cold cloning, you bootstrap the machine with the CD, and (b) whether or not you change the size of the source machine's disks (if you resize down the cloning will go from block-level cloning to file-level cloning which is slower.

Again, if using the Enterprise license, you can run Converter from any installation that has network visibility to the machine being converted.

Its depend on your physical machine's running application & data.

Thanks Craig for the prompt information about live conversions, I thinnk it will be best this is done out of hours as you mentioned to reduce the impacted, but it is very handy information for the future.
