2 CPU not running on 3.5i

Hi a..

I have been running 3.5i on my DELL 295 with 4GB ram for over a 8 months with out issues.

Today I upgraded to 8GB ram and the server run fine, however when I added a 2nd CPU, ESX would not load up it would simply hang during the startup.

Is there a patch or a way around this to make it work with my 2 quad-core cpu with out having to reinstall again?

thanks for your help.

If your host shows as having 8 cores then you should be all set. Check the configuration tab for the host and then "Licensed features", if it says "Licensed for 2 CPUs" there's no need to get another license.

Welcome to the VMware Community forums. Generally you can just add a CPU, reboot and it'll be fine. Is the 2nd CPU the exact same family / model / stepping as the 1st?

Check your hardware setup!.

As Dave mentioned before is the new CPU EXACTLY the same as the old one?

ESX should run fine with an extra CPU without any modifications.

When you down loaded your free license for ESXi how many CPU did you state, you could have a single CPU ESXi license. download anthere ESXi License and pick a larger CPU count.

Hi guys.

DELL was on site today, they upgraded my BIOS and BMC firmware to the latest.

Since then the 2nd CPU kicked in and ESX started up.

When ESX starts up, it only shows once CPU during boot, but in VM infrastructure it shows I have 8 cores.

Where and how to I get a new license to run two CPU's?

thanks for all your help.

Heya, just to ask a stupid question: So if the license tells me that I can use 2 CPU's then it refers to the physical chips? So it won't matter if both those chips house 2/3/4/8/12/16 cores? As long as i have 2 cpu license it means i can use all the cores per chip or am I missing something?

Thanks for your time.

ESXi is licensed per CPU slot so it doesn't matter if the CPU has 1, 2 or 4 cores. With ESXi 4.0 it will matter which edition you want if you need to go over 6 cores per CPU. See this link.
