where is dmotion

I want to move some guests form my esx2.5 to 3.0.1. I have read that dmotion is th best choice, but I cant figure out how to access it. I am in my VI client, but I dont see anything about dmotion

Actually it is under "migrate to new host".

As soon as you have made your old vmfs2 luns available to the new esx 3 server(s) and have created a new vmfs3 lun, which is of course available only to your esx 3 server(s) this migration is a vmotion from your 2.5 servers to your new esx3 server(s). The this vmotion is also called dmotion, because it dynamically moves your 2.5 vm/s from vmfs2 datastores to your new vmfs3 datastore.

See if that helps,

It is the vmotion command it is just called Dmotion because it moves the ESX2 VM to an ESX3 LUN

Thanks. So if my old esx server is a standalone server and my new server is a blade server on the SAN the dmotion cant be accomplished? I read somewhere that both ESX server have to be on the same SAN

Yep that's correct, same requirements as vMotion, so shared storage is needed.
