vmware-tools backwards compatible? 3.5 and 3.5 U4 hosts

I've got 10 ESX host servers that were base 3.5 install, I am putting Update 4 on one or two hosts at a time. I will be VMotioning guests around (2 of the 10 are empty for now). My question is, when I VMotion over and update vmware-tools on the guests, are there any caveats I need to be aware of?

I know I can test this out myself in the short term, but there may be instances where a guest with updated vmware-tools will need to be moved back onto a pre-U4 host and sit there for 48-72 hours and it's a production environment.

Yes they are backward compatable. You can migrate the VM to a host which is not U4 after upgrading vmware tools to U4 release.

as Surya said, you should have no issues using vmotion between your 3.5.x Hosts. Your guest tools should always be the last part of your upgrade process.
