vmware starter edition, rdm and clustering

Hi all,

with the starter license is it possible to configure Raw Device Mappings to make a cluster across boxes?

Thanks all

Do you mean virtual machine 'boxs' or physical boxs? Starter does not support network or remote storage (FC,iSCSI,NAS etc) only directly attached storage. If you want to use an RDM to cluster VM's across physical boxes you would not be able to do this.

EDIT:

Hmm double checking it shows that Starter does support NAS but then under VMFS it says DAS only. It also notes that cluster file system is not included but it is not exactly clear. Sorry doesn't really awnser your question.

And that is correct. DAS and SAN provide block services onto which a VMFS can be stored. NAS provides a file service. The file system is that of the NAS box.

To be able to use a cluster file system, you need access to shared block services = SAN (Fibre Channel or iSCSI).

....and with starter is it possible to access a Raw Device Mapping on san to make a cluster?

Thanks

I don't think so, sorry. Last time I checked, the Starter Edition did not support SAN connections. You need the next level.
