Dear VMware community,
I am running ESX 3.5 in a Sun Blade x6250 environment and have run into a problem after having upgraded the ILOM Firmware (2.0.3.10->3.0.3.33). It seems that some of the PCI IDs changed and were reordered. What I'm specifically concerned about are the network cards, since those NW cards with a different PCI ID are not present in my vSwitches anymore. I tried editing the esx.conf file on one of our test systems to rename the nics in the section with the "/net/pnic/child[xxxx]" entries, however, without success.
After I reboot the system, the old names are kept in the esx.conf file, but the list is appended with the names as they then appear in the VI Client. I tried searching all over for solutions how to rename the vmnics, but I must be doing something wrong here, or it's not possible to do so. Everywhere I've searched, actually, people have said to edit the esx.conf file, but nowhere have I heard a confirmation that this prodecure worked.
Is there any way to rename the vmnic names or at least to reset the names to a "factory default"? Or perhaps somebody can think of another way to bypass this setback without having to reinstall the systems.
I attached my esx.conf, if that can provide any further information.
Thanks in advance for your help!
