vlan issue

Hey,

we are using ES 3.X.

it is currently connected to port 11 on a cisco 2950 switch in vtp client mode. Also, port 11 is configured as a trunk port w/ the switchport nonegotiate command issued. so when i do a show run @ the # promopt.. i get this.

Interface FastEthernet0/11

switchport trunk allowed vlan 2,3,5

switchport mode trunk

switchport nonegotiate.

on the esx server i have two nic's. 1 is a service (netgear nic) and the 2nd is for the vlan.

on the server i have a vswitch w/ port groups w/ the correct vlan id's.

so i have something like this.

vlan config

Vlan id: 5

Vlan name: Servers.

i take a host and tell it to connect to the server network using the config settings through virtual center.

the host boots, the network cable is connected, but can not ping anything.

any idea's what is wrong here?

Is the nic that you are using for your vlan on the HCL. I did not see netgear on the hcl for esx server.

Also if you remove trunking from the equation can you connect externally do anything using the nic.

Even if you try another port on the switch using a straigt vlan. Create another vswitch with no trunk

test connectivity.

What is the exact make and model on the nic's in the server.

Hey,

the netgear is only the service nic.

we have 3com 3c905c-tx as the trunking nics.

I will take another pic and plug it directly into a vlan port on the switch here in a few minutes.

however.. I believe the switch configs are correct. I used another host that was able to send out vlan id's with it's packets and plugged it into the same port that vm-server is plugged into. Communication was fine and it was able to ping the entire network.

ok.

i plugged another nic into a vlan port (vlan 3 and port fa/14).

redid the vSwitch to not send out vlan packets.

started up the vhost. sent a ping request to 10.10.10.1 and got answers back.

Make sure the native VLAN is set to VLAN 1.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

However the answer to the problem was the nic card.

apparently 3c905c-tx can not pass the vlan traffic correctly.
