vcb & backup exec 12.5 w/ vmware option - Showing of disks in the disk managment

Hello,

I have an EMC SAN (CX3-20 and CX4-120) and I have allowed a LUN to be shared among in backup server. Backup server has VCB, & backup exec 12.5

Is the following a normal behavior ?

1 - When I click on the disk management in the computer management then the LUN that I've shared appears as an "unkown" partition.

2 - Now when I right click it allows me to delete. When I did delete, it basically caused me a lot of troubles on my esx environment.

My other question is:

Is there away so that I still can share this LUN so that my Backup Exec + VCB can still perform backups but this lun not appearing in the computer management ? I am just afraid that something would go wrong and the LUNs might be accidentally deleted (which will create the biggest problem for me in my production environment)

Please find attached the screen shot.

Best,

Ahmed

Yes (if you mean disk 4 state).

Do not nothing on disk (and also use diskpart to disable automount).

You must see VMFS as basic disk / unknow.

The is the VCB driver that can read the content.

And VCB scripts that perform disk copy or disk mount.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick one.

Is there a way not to have it appear at all ?

Because even in this case, the disk to appear with a red sign on it.

Also,

what is the difference between diskpart automount disable (which doesn't seem to work on my server) and mountvol /N ??

Thanks,

Do not use the SAN mode Smiley Wink

Using diskpart you can disable automount, just to be sure that there is no automatic wizard that initialize your VMFS disk.

We just implemented VCB 1.5 + BE 12.5 and VMware Converter works really great. Unless you want to backup to disk, then you can create LUN and use disk management to create the volume and drive and specify folder to backup the VMs. You can check out Chris Skinner on guides for VCB with BE, Commvault, TSM, etc.. at www.viops.vmware.com for details.
