In ESX 2.5.1 you could copy and paste a vmdk file, then create a new VM and attach it to the new VMDK file..
I cant seem to do this in VI3.
I want to build a standard Windows 2003 server then copy the vmdk file so I dont have to build one in the future..
Why don't you just use the Cloning and Template features to do this?
If you have VC, use the template feature. If you don't have VC, the template feature is un-available, but you can use the clone feature. Create new VM, patch it, install Vmware Tools and sysprep it. Leave powered off, and select clone from VI client on that VM.....it will clone it to LUN you select, power on and enter licence key, IP and name.........

Well how about that....learn something new everyday........looks like you need VC and cloning function is a feature of that........
