transitioning VMs to new host - host licencing expiring problem

I have a fully licenced ESX 3 host (+ VC foundation with licence server) and I'm in the process of setting up 2x ESX 3.5 hosts and new SAN to replace the single 3.02.

I don't have enough licences to have all 3 of the hosts running at the same time.

I did have the evaluation esx 3.5 on the hosts, but they have now expired and I didn't get a chance to test VCB. (got held up by other issues and a holiday in the middle)

I don't want to do a straight change over in case there are problems with the VMs on the new hosts, so I was going to migrate one or two VMs at a time. (which is also a pain as the 2x evaluation ESX 3.5 hosts won't add to virtual center due to licencing)

Other than reinstalling ESX 3.5 to get another 60 days (and having to reconfigure ISCSI etc) is there a better way to do this?

I don't think you can get another trial license to extend it. The only option is to re-install ESX Server.

But why bother with ESX 3.5 specially VCB, when you have the option for vSphere and ESX 4. Data Recovery is much better comparing to VCB.

Thanks,

The SAN isn't on the HCL for vspehere yet and I'd rather wait until its not so leading edge.

Could you use the free version of ESXi?

Alternatively, a quick rebuild - this will pretty quick and provide 60 days, but I agree . . .vSphere and Data Recovery is the way forward

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

I'm installing vsphere to have a look, but I'm still concerned that the san isnt on the HCL.. That and HP system management agents aren't released etc.

I only have vsphere standard, so don't get any of the useful stuff..
