the format of domain names specified in the search list is invalid

We've made some changes recently and I need to modify the DNS Servers under Configuration/DNS and Routing. When I do I hit 'OK' and get the following error:

"The format of domain names specified in the search list is invalid"

And it's referring to the last field "Look for hosts in the following domains"

It's filled in (i.e. ad.local) correctly, but I cannot save the DNS changes because of the above error. Is ESX having trouble with the long suffix (.local)? Is there a way I can change this in a config file somewhere manually?

Many thanks in advance!

It might be that the wizard is expecting a 3 character extension. You might try just adding it manually to the etc/resolv.conf file.

That's the file I needed, thanks! Once I make the change, do I have to restart any service to make it take effect? Or will it eventually show up on the configuration page?

I don't think you will need to, if it does not take effect you can restart the network service as described in the below kb article...

That's the one I thought. I'll try it later. Thanks!

FYI: You need to restart the following (or reboot the box):

Service network restart

Service mgmt-vmware restart
